Majella National Park

Established, together with that of the Gran Sasso-Laga in 1991, 74,095 hectares covers the provinces of Pescara, Chieti and L'Aquila. The Park Authority has its headquarters and offices in Pacentro Guardiagrele and Caramanico Terme. The second is the Majella massif nearly Apennines with the 3000 Mount Amaro. Its shape is very characteristic of massive and rounded, almost comparable to a grand elliptical dome. Majella began to form 100 million years ago on a shallow tropical sea. The remains of calcareous marine organisms continued to accumulate until the bottom, about 7 million years ago, it began to rise, forming a giant fold, broken in several places. Despite the abundant summer rains and autumn and heavy snowfalls, the Majella is poor in water courses.

The mountain, it behaves like a giant sponge, absorbing what the water is stored in underground caverns veins and releases it only to the valley, where rich instead of springs. The western side, no valley is steeper. The eastern one is a little sweeter, but it is crossed by long valleys. Over 2100 meters of altitude Majella shows signs of erosion of glaciers 10,000 years ago. It is presented here as a giant undulating plateau, however, moved by sharp ridges and peaks. Majella dominates the Abruzzo countryside rising up between the sea and the Apennines. In addition to the main peak, Monte Amaro (2795 m), there are thirty more than 2000 m. Among these, there are the Monte Acquaviva (2737 m), Cima of Murelle (2596 m), Mount Focalone (2676 m) and the Round Table (2403 m). Being highly karst mountains are among the many caves of which the most important is the Cave of the Breaker where you can read the sequence of the different geological cycles.
