WHAT TO DO
The Cortijo El Descanso, is located in the Almeria municipality of Vélez-Rubio. This has a beautiful monumental helmet that includes several stately buildings, a beautiful City Hall and the monumental baroque temple of La Encarnación, with cathedral dimensions.
And a few kilometers away is the neighboring town of Vélez-Blanco , with a great monumental wealth:
This municipality is part of the Sierra MarÃa-Los Vélez Natural Park and the Route of the Castles through Andalusian lands . It is, therefore, an appropriate destination for both fans of rural tourism and sports
Of its urban center, the most striking is the Castle-Palace that crowns it, one of the jewels of the Spanish Renaissance. Built on the old Arab citadel in the sixteenth century, by order of the first Marquis of Los Vélez, and declared a National Historic Monument , stands on a rock over 1,000 meters high, offering a wide and beautiful view of the area. Only the exterior is conserved, since its magnificent interior decoration was sold at the beginning of the 20th century and today it is exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Activities:
Hiking enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the different signposted trails such as the Pinar de las Muelas, Sierra Larga or Solana del Maimón. But to know all the possibilities offered by the park, it is best to go to the Almacén del Trigo Visitor Center, which is on Marqués de Los Vélez avenue.
